What Experience Looks Like

Lily Eskelsen García started her career in education as a lunch lady in a school kitchen, then a kindergarten aide, and starving folk singer working her way through college, earning a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s in instructional technology.  After only nine years teaching, she was named Utah Teacher of the Year.  She won election as her state Association president, ran for U.S. Congress, and served as president of the Utah State Retirement System.  She is a current commissioner on the White House Commission for Education Excellence for Hispanics and serves as a board member for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. She served as NEA Secretary-Treasurer, Vice President and is currently NEA President.
